Synopsis
The publication of this book coincides with a increasing recognition that the challenges facing society and organisations are not amenable to "quick fixes". The approaches to consultancy which underpin the cases presented here are particularly relevant in this new context. The contributors are graduates of AOC [The Tavistock Institute Masters Programme in Advanced Organisational Change and Consulting] and their associates; and the work they describe here is a testament to the quality of that programme and the learning that participants get from it.
Description
'Eric Miller [was] one of the founders of the programme in Advanced Organisational Change and Consulting (AOC). Knowing how highly he thought of the published word and of organisational practitioners' capacities to reflect on their experiences, to make sense of their practice, and to make their words publically available, I know he would have been immensely proud of this edited book, which does exactly this. I believe that "Mind-ful Consulting" is an essential read for any consultant who cares about the development of their praxis, and it is a refreshing asset to the scholarly writings within the Tavistock Institute's traditions.
- Eliat Aram, Director, the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations, from the Foreword 'One thread which runs through the book is consultancy as learning: learning for both the client and the consultant. The contributors to this book are both accomplished and experienced as consultants, and in a continuous process of development. They are open to reflection, critique of their work, and learning from and with their clients. This notion of learning on the part of client is important too. An effective consultancy intervention is one which not only helps the client to address a particular issue or problem, but which also develops the capacity of the client organisation and individuals in it to respond to change and development in the future.'
- Phil Swann, Director of the Tavistock Institute (2004-2008)
'This thoughtful book adds to the growing literature on ‘mindful' organisational and consulting practice,
written by a group of scholarly practitioners reflecting on their craft. It opens up important new approaches for intervening to achieve learning and change at the individual and system levels alike. Here is a well grounded riposte to those who see management consulting as no more than an ‘impression management' industry by a group of consultants who think deeply about theory and how it connects to practice.'
- Professor Ewan Ferlie, Head of Department of Management, Kings College London
